OPENING RECEPTION Thursday, February 11 | 6-9pm
O Cinema Wynwood | 90 NW 29th St, Miami, FL 33127

Through the use of postcards, Traveling to Cuba documents the natural human communication and exchange that is increasing between people who live in the United States and Cuba. On December 17, 2014 President Obama’s order to restore diplomatic relations with Cuba encouraged more contact which greatly expanded travel opportunities for Cuba bound visitors. For the last year and a half, Garmendia has invited travelers throughout Miami to participate in this project by asking them to mail from Cuba a postcard that she designed (Cuban postage included). This can take anywhere from 3 to 18 weeks. To date, Garmendia has distributed over 1,000 postcards and has received 152 in the mail.

Rosa Naday Garmendia | Havana, Cuba | Lives and works in Miami
Garmendia is a socially engaged artist whose art making process is fed by her interest in the human condition. For the last 15 years, she has cultivated a diverse artistic practice using a wide range of media including painting, drawing, fabric, collage, site specific installations, photography, illustration and mural painting. Recurrent themes and imagery in her work include visual expressions of identity, migration, alienation, history, war and beliefs. Garmendia’s art making process is fed by her experiences as a woman, an immigrant and an industrial worker, which have shaped her ideas about injustice. She is inspired by her personal relationship to colonization and the disrupted genealogies that come forth as a result. As an artist, she considers her studio practice a daily act of resistance.

Garmendia, born in Havana, Cuba, immigrated to the United States with her family at the age of 8. She has pursued her fine art studies at various universities and art institutes, including University of South Florida, Parsons School of Design, University of Miami, Vermont Studio Center, and the Fort Lauderdale Art Institute. Garmendia has exhibited in Miami as well as New York, Cuba, Guadeloupe and Suriname.
