Friend of Franz Liszt and Hector Berlioz, Louis Moreau Gottschalk was the first american musician to be acclaimed in Europe as both a virtuoso pianist and a composer
He was also the first to introduce elements of afro-caribbean and afro-american music in classical pieces with a complex formal development
